27.04.1991 - -
At 3 months after seeding my PSA = 3.8 (Abbott assay). I currently have some urinary and bowel side effects but none serious. Unlike a successful RP, radiation treatment results in a slow reduction of PSA over time and the fact that my PSA is now lower than my pre-treatment of 5.6 is a good sign. The radioactive Iodine seed implanted in my prostate gland and seminal vesicles will produce a total dose of 12, 000 cGy of radiation and the 35 external beam treatments added an additional 4,500 cGy. For those interested in the details of my treatment I am copying the remarks below from my PCD (Prostate Cancer Digest). I would recommend that every patient keep one, containing all of the details of his diagnosis and treatment.

01/28/98 Catheter removed by Dr.Berson. Some blood in urine
during first void in doctor's office, none since.
Given funnel to stain urine and lead vial to store any
seeds expelled. Discomfort from insertion of 25 trans-
perineal needles minimal to the point where after
leaving the doctor's office the wife and I took a driving
tour of Covington's antebellum homes spared in Sherman's
March to the Sea. Gut-stuffing dinner at Pa-Pa's Country
Buffet.
01/29/98 Large amount of blood noticed in ejaculate.
01/30/98 Less blood noticed in ejaculate.
02/05/98 Very little blood noticed in ejaculate.
02/11/98 Simulation at RCOG Decatur clinic (11:00 AM)
02/17/98 First EBRT treatment (non-conformal, "butterfly")
to the pelvic area for five sessions that week.
Second week, 5 sessions of conformal EBRT
Third week, 5 sessions of non-conformal pelvic bed EBRT
Fourth thru Sixth week - 5 session each week of conformal
Seventh week - 5 sessions tightly conformed to the apex area.
Toward end of first week of EBRT hemorrhoids became inflamed
but easily controlled with Preparation-H. All else well.
Side effects noted during second week of EBRT were primarily
urgency and frequency. Stream weak during third week, took
Saw Palmetto at suggestion of Dr. Critz. Stream weaker during
fourth week of EBRT. Dr. Williams gave me sample Flomax
tablets which worked well. Got prescription and found 1 to 2
tablets per day prevented problems. Experienced loss of
energy after returning home (8 weeks after start of EBRT).
Energy level improved by 10 weeks after start of EBRT and
use of Flomax down to one tablet every other day.

My name is Jack Jennings from Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at aged 59 on 27 November 1997. My Initial PSA was 5.6 with a Gleason of 7. I chose to be treated with I-125 Brachytherapy, followed by External Beam Radiation Therapy.

After the initial effects (fear, anger, depression, etc.) of my diagnosis, I embarked on over 1000 hours of intensive research about this disease and its treatment. My conclusion was that selecting the doctor and facility that provided the treatment is as, or even more important, than the treatment chosen. With a Gleason of 7 and an alarming short term PSA velocity, it was clear to me that the disease was aggressive and that the high probability of extra-capsular extension would require treatment to kill not only any cancer WITHIN the gland, but also any that may have escaped. I selected Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, based primarily on their excellent results as documented in peer-reviewed professional journals as well as telephone interviews with 4 of their patients.

Upon arriving at their facility I was surprised to find that the level of compassion and human caring was fully the equal of their top-notch medical care. Today I was implanted with 108 Iodine 125 seeds at Newton General Hospital (Covington, GA) by Dr. Michael Berson (urologist) and Dr. Clint Holladay (radiation oncologist) Cipro taken day before and week following. Volume of prostate confirmed to be 27.5 cc.

I lead an active life, farming, woodcutting and grandfathering and enjoy robust excellent health. I have no assurance that my treatment will result in an actual "cure", I did my homework, and the peace of mind from making an "informed decision" allows me to continue this journey through life with joy and exuberance.

Current Age 62. Current PSA 0.1. Current Treatment none. Treatment has been completed. Initial treatment? Brachytherapy followed by EBRT. After 1000 hours of research regarding this disease and its treatment, I elected to travel 800 miles to Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia. My stay there was actually a lot of fun. Morbidities during and shortly after treatment were minimal. And now, over three and one-half years after treatment, I still have completely normal bowel and urinary functions, enjoy a wonderful sexual relationship with my dear wife Sharon and have a PSA that is stable at less than 0.1 ng./ml. Only time will tell if I have really been CURED of this disease, but I'm extremely happy with my choice of treatment and would gladly share my experiences with anyone who might be interested. Following is my PSA history since treatment. Note that the PSA recording form on this website does not allow notation of the PSA assay used by the laboratory. PSA results form different assays produce different numbers and ARE NOT comparable.
07/27/98 PSA (6 months after seeding) = 2.3 (Abbott assay)
Minimal urinary side effects linger.
01/30/99 PSA (12 months after seeding = 1.1 (Hybritech assay)
Almost no side effects remaining.
07/28/99 PSA (18 months after seeding) = 0.9 (Abbott assay)
Absolutely no side effects remaining.

Wow.... 10 years out and doing great
Sent a luncheon to Dr. Clint and his office staff in AL.
Sent a letter of thanks to Dr. Critz
01/28/09 PSA (126 months after seeding) = less than 0.1 (Bayer assay)
Absolutely no side effects remaining. Noticed slight return
of ejaculate.
07/28/09 PSA (132 months after seeding) = 0.1 (Bayer assay) Questioned
reason for not being "undetectable". Increased ejaculate
volume may indicate regrowth of glandular prostate tissue.
Slight loss of erectile function noted, but no other side effects.
01/28/10 PSA (138 months after seeding) = less than 0.1 (Bayer assay)
Believe last reading may be due to lab or calibration error.
Increased ejaculate volume continues. No ED drugs needed yet.
07/28/10 PSA (144 months after seeding) = less than 0.1 (Bayer assay)

Increased ejaculate volume continues.
01/28/11 PSA (150 months after seeding) = less than 0.1 (Bayer assay)
Increased ejaculate volume continues.
06/28/11 PSA (156 months after seeding) = less than 0.1 (Bayer assay)

At 18 years post treatment at Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia (Decatur GA, USA) my PSA remains undetectable. In addition I still have an intact prostate gland and have had no side effects. At age 77 I still enjoy an active sex life though a bit of ED from old age requires they use of v iagra. I now know why men from all over the world, including some of the top doctors from Harleigh Street in London, go to this facility in Georgia to be treated. RCOG's combined treatment protocol, which involves the implantation of radioactive seeds inside the prostate gland and seminal vesicles, plus external beam radiation to kill any cancer cells that might have escaped the gland, can actually CURE prostate cancer if the disease is diagnosed early
